I remember it very well, even
though it is half a century ago for me.
My
first teacher at Edgware
Secondary Modern, as it was called then, (in
1948)
was Miss Keirl (English)
& I was in Form 1. Miss Roland took Form
1P
(parallel) & the
beautiful Miss Bell had Form 1S (supplementary).
The
following year they changed
the numbering system to Form 1A,1B, etc.
Miss
Perry was the Head Mistress
when I arrived & was soon replaced by
Mr.
Middleton, who in time was
replaced by Mr. Cook.
After Miss Keirl had
straightened me out I moved on to Form 2A with
Mr.
(Bomber) Brown (tech. drawing
& maths), then it was Form 3A with Mrs.
Stocks
(French & history),
finally 4T (technical) with Mr. Pike, who taught
maths,
ran the "Radio club" (for the
would be electronics wizards), plus
the
"Evening Institute" for those
of us who did not get enough of it during
the
day, &
others.
Other teachers I remember
are: Mr. Hodgkins (science & geography),
Mr.
Lettuce (woodwork), Mr. Shaw
(4C commercial) & chess, Mr. Kew (art),
Mr.
Loads (craft & sports),
Mr. Davies (PE), Mr. Roeder, Miss Frost, Mr.
Barns
(sports) & Mr. Lewis who
I remembered from Deansbrook Junior.
Students I remember are: John
Davies, John (Soapy) Southwich, who went
to
California in 1950. Jean
Caepon, Kathleen Mcloughlin, Ann
Collins,Teddy
Dickens, Trevor Lewis, Jean
Hanna, Pam Baily, Colin Young, Ronny
Wiseman,
Jean Bootle, Jean
Chipperfield, Jimmy Boen, Sylvia Kent, Nadia Dixon,
Ann
Wallace, Norman Breeden,
Billy Lambert, Moreen Willis, Hilda Kempgee
&
Grace Elliott who lived next
door to me.
Like most people at Edgware
back then I left school with no
qualifications,
however I did manage to
obtain a Higher National in mechanical
engineering
from Hendon tech. on a part
time course in 1959, while I was an
apprentice
at Handley Page
Aircraft.
I would be glad to hear from
any of the above, or any of those I did
not
mention, assuming that there
are any other dinosaurs still alive.
