School Leaving Year: 1966

Memory of Edgware School:I went to Edgware in Sept 1959. I graduated in 1966. Th school building were 3 years old . It was exiting to go to such a new school. All in all I was happy there. There were good teachers but I feared Norman Barnes( PE). He was a sadist and I suspect sexually immature, he enjoyed caning boys whcih he did often with gusto. He was a bully and I would say that he removed any fun that I had in particpating in team sport I would do anything I could to avoid his classes. Such a man should never have been allowed to hide behind his profession . Im pleased to say that these days he would not be given that freedom. If there was one teacher whom I loved and thank God for her influence,that was Mrs Liz Porter. Without her I would never have read a book. She was a beacon lighting the minds of her class.

In my view,the role of the teacher is to encourage the Love of learning, Certainly Mrs Porter did that in my life. Norman Barnes did not and when now in my 50s I return to Edgware School it is alas the spectre of Barnes that haunts me to this day.

I went to Canada at 20 and obtained a Degree in French from Mcgill University. I am now Semi Retired from being Vice President of a Canadian Bank. I Reside in Toronto Canada for most of the year where I operate as Consulting busieness. I visit London twice a year & I am in touch with 2 of my old classmates.

Edgware under Messrs Cook, Hodgkins and Miss Rowland, the triumvrate of my time there ,stood me in good stead for the world. What a shame we remain only as children in their memory, not the adults which we become
